Daughter of musicians, her musical learning and trajectory began from her very beginnings.
She made her recording debut with a couple of albums alongside Joan Chamorro: Joan Chamorro presenta Rita Payés (Jazz to Jazz, 2015) and Lua Amarela (Jazz to Jazz, 2016), thus launching her international projection. Apart from that, she was part of the Sant Andreu Jazz Band between 2014 and 2018. She participated in all the albums of the band (and sub-formations) recorded in that period and later participated punctually as a collaborating artist, both in recordings and live performances.
The affinity and affection led her to collaborate with guitarist Elisabeth Roma, her mother. They co-led and self-published two albums together: Imagina (Self-released, 2019), composed of beloved versions, and Como la piel (Self-released, 2021), an album built on versions and, for the first time, original songs influenced by jazz, bossa nova, bolero, classical music and popular songs. Songs like “Algo contigo” are on the way to 52 million plays on Spotify and the video “Nunca vas a comprender” close to 7 million plays on YouTube, adding to her over 1.3 million monthly listeners.
In parallel, she has worked with a multitude of musicians from different fields. Her versatility as an instrumentalist and singer has made her collaborate in various big band formations and countless jazz training projects. As well as her collaboration with the prestigious German big band “WDR Big Band”, who dedicated a program to her with arrangements of her own songs; or the collaboration with the Clasijazz Big Band, which has recently been conducted by the renowned and admired Maria Schneider.
Although she grew up with jazz as her flag, her career has led her to expand her stylistic concerns. This is how she fell in love with “the song” and now lets her current music drink from that influence. This openness has also led her to collaborate with artists such as C. Tangana, Silvana Estrada, Salvador Sobral, Kiko Veneno, Silvia Pérez Cruz, MARO…
Her recent visit to Mexico and Colombia confirmed her international reach, especially in the American continent, where she has a legion of fans who sold out the Teatro El Cantoral in Mexico City and the Jazzalparque festival in Bogotá.
Rita Payés also receives a massive reception in Spain where she has sold out tickets at the Sala Eslava in Madrid, Sala Paral·lel 62, Teatro Grec de Barcelona, Lope de Vega de Sevilla, etc.
And in other countries such as France, Germany, the Netherlands, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, Hungary, Latvia, Denmark, the United Kingdom, Morocco… where she has been opening up her path since the beginning of her career.
Her talent did not go unnoticed by C. Tangana, who fell in love with her music. The Madrileño, one of the most sought-after artists of the moment, admitted through social networks that Rita Payés’ music was one of his main influences in the composition of “Comerte entera”, a Brazilian-flavored piece of music in which the artist collaborated with Toquinho. Shortly after, Rita Payés received a call from Tangana and together they also dazzled at the 2022 Goya Awards with a joint performance in which they performed “Te venero“, a previously unreleased song. From then on, Rita also became part of the Madrileño artist’s “Sin Cantar ni Afinar Tour”.
More recently, Rita Payés has been one of the voices chosen to collaborate with Jon Batiste on his new album. The five-time Grammy winner recently released his new album titled World Music Radio, which includes the joint track “My heart” with the Catalan trombonist. Payés is not the only artist who has collaborated with the prestigious New Orleans musician. They also have prominent roles such as Lana del Rey, Lil Wayne, Kenny G or Camilo.
With her new album De Camino al Camino, Rita Payés makes her first publication exclusively of her own compositions. A vital and musical path that culminates, for now, with the arrival of this album.
Other collaborations of Rita Payés throughout her career: Jimmy Cobb, Louis Hayes, Scott Robinson, Scott Hamilton, Andrea Motis, Maria Schneider, MARO, Sílvia Pérez Cruz, Jon Batiste, Silvana Estrada, Pedro Guerra, Oques Grasses, Daniel Me Estás Matando, Lucía Fumero, Pol Batlle, WDR Big Band, Toni Vaquer, Perico Sambeat, C.Tangana, among others.
